Check Digit

Check Digit Definition:

A check digit is a separate digit number included in a container's identification serial number to check the accuracy of the owner code prefix, the model series identifier, and the serial number.

The check digit acts as a validation mechanism and is calculated based on the other digits in the container number. Each shipping container has an identification number, which includes a four-letter prefix, a six-digit serial number, and one check digit. This identification number helps shipping companies and shipment handlers choose the suitable container for the cargo and track the container easily. A set mathematical formula calculates the correct check digit for a specific container. If the check digit on the container is accurate, the computation result will match the check digit on the container.
